Moving to Darwin for Defence: RAAF Base Darwin and Robertson Barracks Guide

Darwin is one of Australia's most important Defence locations, home to RAAF Base Darwin, Robertson Barracks and HMAS Coonawarra. Every posting season, hundreds of Defence families arrive in the Top End — many for the first time.

This guide covers what Defence families need to know about moving to Darwin, and where a local removalist can help.

This guide is general information. Always check your relocation entitlements with Defence and your relocation provider before you make bookings.

Key points: Posting removals for eligible members are arranged through Defence's provider, Toll Transitions. Housing support comes through Defence Housing Australia (DHA). Peak posting season usually lines up with the start of Darwin's wet season, so plan for the weather.

How Defence relocations work

If you're an eligible ADF member on posting:

  • Removals are arranged through Toll Transitions, Defence's contracted relocation provider.
  • Housing support is provided by Defence Housing Australia (DHA), which helps with selecting housing, temporary accommodation and rental arrangements.
  • Defence Relocations and Housing Managers can help with questions or issues about relocation and housing.

Start with your entitlements. Don't book a private removalist for anything your posting covers until you've checked.

When a private removalist helps

Plenty of Defence families still need a local removalist. Common situations:

  • Moving within Darwin — for example, from temporary accommodation or a private rental into your long-term home, when it's outside your entitlement
  • Items not covered by your entitlement, such as extra vehicles' contents, a second fridge, or items stored elsewhere
  • Leaving a private rental and needing a removal and bond clean together
  • Partners, Defence civilians and contractors who aren't covered by the same arrangements
  • Leaving Defence and moving within Darwin or interstate privately

✎ Edit: Add any Defence family offer, e.g. "We offer a __% discount for Defence families on local moves."

Posting season and the wet

Peak posting season usually runs from about November to January. That's the build-up and start of the wet season in Darwin — hot, humid and stormy.

Plan for it: - Book morning moves when storms are less likely - Use plastic tubs for documents, electronics and linen - Unpack soft items quickly to beat the humidity - Know what to do if a cyclone watch or warning is issued

Where Defence families live

Many Defence households live in:

  • Palmerston — newer estates such as Bellamack, Zuccoli and Johnston, convenient for Robertson Barracks
  • Northern suburbs — Leanyer, Wanguri, Lyons and Muirhead, handy for RAAF Base Darwin
  • Rural area — Howard Springs and Coolalinga for families who want space

Your Darwin arrival checklist

  • Check NT rules for transferring your car registration (within 28 days) and driver licence (within 3 months) — Defence members should confirm any exemptions that apply to them
  • Set up electricity so air-conditioning works from day one
  • Find your nearest GP, school and childcare
  • Pack a cyclone kit if you arrive between November and April
  • Join local Defence family networks for advice and community
