Many people moving to Darwin from the south drive up the Stuart Highway while their furniture travels separately. It's one of Australia's great road trips — and with some planning, a smooth way to arrive in the Top End.
The route: Adelaide → Port Augusta → Coober Pedy → Alice Springs → Tennant Creek → Katherine → Darwin. About 3,000 km, usually four to six days.
Plan the move around the drive
- Book your removalist first, then plan the drive around the pickup date.
- Expect your furniture to arrive after you if it's backloaded — commonly 14–28 business days. See How Long Does an Interstate Move to Darwin Take?
- Pack an essentials kit in the car — bedding, clothes, kitchen basics, documents, medication and chargers.

Coming from Melbourne or Sydney? Add the drive to Adelaide or Port Augusta first. From Brisbane, many people head inland via Mount Isa and join the Stuart Highway near Tennant Creek.
Safety tips
- Don't drive at dawn, dusk or night. Kangaroos, cattle and other animals are most active then.
- Overtake road trains carefully. They can be over 50 metres long. Only overtake with a long, clear stretch ahead.
- Refuel often. Fill up whenever you can, even if you're half full.
- Carry water — at least several litres per person — plus snacks.
- Rest every two hours. Distances are long and the road is straight.
- Check your car before you leave: tyres (including the spare), oil, coolant and air-con.
- Phone coverage is patchy. Tell someone your plan each day.
Wet season driving
From about November to April, heavy rain can flood sections of road in the Top End.
- Check NT road conditions before each day's drive
- Never drive through floodwater
- Allow extra days in case of closures
