Shipping Containers vs Removal Trucks for Interstate Moves

When you move interstate to or from Darwin, you'll usually choose between three ways to get your furniture there: a removal truck (dedicated), a backload on a shared truck, or a shipping container.

This guide compares containers and trucks so you can pick the right one.

Quick answer: A container suits people who want to pack at their own pace and save money. A dedicated truck suits people who need fixed dates and the least handling. A backload is often cheapest for smaller moves.

How each option works

Removal truck (dedicated)

Removalists load your belongings into a truck that travels only for you, straight to your new home. You get fixed pickup and delivery dates.

Backload

Your goods share space on a truck already travelling your route. Cheaper, with delivery windows. Read What Is Backloading?

Shipping container

A container is delivered to your home. You (or the removalist) load it, it's sealed, and it travels by road or rail to your new address, where it's unloaded.

Darwin things to check

Placement

Containers are big. Check you have a flat, firm spot with clear access for the delivery truck. If it needs to go on the street or footpath, you may need council permission — check with City of Darwin, City of Palmerston or Litchfield Council.

Heat and humidity

A sealed container in the sun gets very hot inside. Don't pack candles, vinyl records or heat-sensitive items without protection, and make sure everything is completely dry to avoid mould. See Packing for Darwin Humidity.

Loading properly

Goods in a container can shift. Load heavy items at the bottom and towards the front, fill gaps, and strap loads down.

Wet season

Rain during loading is a real risk from November to April. Plan a morning loading window and have tarps ready. See Moving House in the Wet Season.

What does it cost?

Container prices depend on the size, route, road or rail, and whether you load it yourself. Compare quotes against backload and dedicated options. For backload averages from Darwin, see Interstate Removals Cost from Darwin.
