Hidden Removalist Fees to Watch Out For (and How to Avoid Them)

The hourly rate on your quote is rarely the whole story. Most moving bills that blow out do so because of fees nobody mentioned until moving day.

Here are the most common removalist extras, what they typically cost, and the one question that stops each one catching you out.

The fix for almost all of them: Get a written, itemised quote based on an accurate inventory and full access details — and ask, "What could change this price on the day?"

1. Travel or call-out fees

What it is: A fee for the drive from the removalist's depot to your home and back, often charged as a fixed amount or 30–60 minutes of time.

Ask: "Is there a travel fee? How much, exactly?"

2. Minimum hours

What it is: Most removalists have a 2–3 hour minimum. A 90-minute job is still billed at the minimum.

Ask: "What's your minimum charge, and do you charge in 15- or 30-minute blocks after that?"

For small jobs, a small move service can work out cheaper.

3. When the clock starts

What it is: Some companies start charging when they leave the depot; others start at your door. The difference can be an hour or more.

Ask: "When does the clock start and stop?"

4. Stairs and long carries

What it is: Extra charges, or simply extra time, for stairs, lifts or a long walk from the truck to the door. Very common in Darwin with elevated homes and CBD apartments.

Ask: "How do you price stairs and long carries?" Then tell them exactly what access is like at both ends. See Moving into a Darwin High-Rise.

5. Weekend and public holiday rates

What it is: Higher rates on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays.

Ask: "Is your rate the same every day?"

6. Packing materials

What it is: Boxes, tape, mattress covers and stretch wrap billed per item.

Ask: "Which materials are included, and what do extras cost?"

7. Heavy and specialty items

What it is: Pianos, pool tables, safes, large gym equipment and spa baths often have a separate fee because they need extra crew or equipment. In Darwin, these typically add $200–$800 per item.

Ask: "Are any of my items priced separately?" See Moving Heavy Items.

8. Waiting time

What it is: If the lift isn't booked, the keys aren't ready, or the previous tenants haven't moved out, you're paying for the crew to wait.

Ask: "Do you charge for waiting time?" Then make sure you don't need it.

9. Storage fees

What it is: If your goods can't be delivered on the day, storage charges may apply.

Ask: "If delivery is delayed, are there storage charges? Who decides?"

10. Insurance

What it is: Transit insurance is usually an optional extra. Not having it can cost you much more if something is damaged.

11. GST

What it is: A rate quoted ex-GST adds 10% to the final bill.

Ask: "Does your quote include GST?"

12. Inventory changes

What it is: If more turns up on the day than was on your list (a full shed, a second fridge), the job takes longer — or on fixed-price and interstate moves, costs more.

Ask: "What happens if I have more than I listed?" Then make your list complete.

A warning about "hostage loads"

Consumer groups have warned about rogue operators who demand extra money before releasing your belongings. A reputable removalist won't do this. Protect yourself by:

  • Getting a written quote and contract
  • Checking reviews and an ABN
  • Avoiding companies that want most of the payment upfront

Hourly or fixed price?

If surprises worry you, a fixed-price quote based on a video walk-through removes most of them. Compare the two in Fixed Price vs Hourly Removalists.
